Challenge
Speaking to a dual Chinese-New Zealand identity, I wanted to create a photographic exhibition that would encapsulate these values, with promotional materials to match.
Solution
Hand-colouring photographic film was a common Chinese technique that was incorporated onto 4x5 black and white negatives, giving a signature look. The subjects all belonged to the Chinese diaspora in New Zealand and were set dressed with objects that translate as kitsch in local culture, but have meaningful links back to tradition. The exhibition was promoted with print materials that further enriched this message with my native language.
